Acne is caused by overactive oil glands. Acne usually occurs during adolescence but some cases can occur at any age. This problem can be aggravated by dirt, grime, sweat, heat and humidity. People with oily face have more possibilities of developing acne than people with dry or sensitive skin.

Acne is actually a minor inflammatory infection of the skin. Sebaceous glands, also known as pore-related glands, are usually tiny little glands located near the surface of the skin. The glands connect to hair follicles, that are small hollow holes on the skin that an individual sebaceous hair grows from. In normal acne, the glands start to make too much sebum which mixes up with dead skin cells, and then the plug collapses on the follicle causing inflammation.

There are several other causes of acne but hormonal irregularities, bacteria and clogged pores are the main factors. Hormonal changes in the body can cause the sebaceous glands to produce excessive amount of sebum and this, in turn, traps dirt and bacteria beneath the surface. A good hygiene is important in preventing acne. But if you already have acne, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist so that the right treatment can be recommended for your specific case.

Blackheads are caused by the blocking of the pores caused by excessive oil and dead skin. Pores get clogged when bacteria and sebum mix with the dead skin cells. As a result, a whitehead appears and this is filled with pus. This can appear anywhere on the skin, but the most common place you will see blackheads is on the nose. They look ugly and it is hard to cover them up unless they are treated professionally.

In order to prevent acne and blackheads from occurring, it is important to maintain cleanliness on the skin. Wash your face at least twice a day with a mild cleanser which does not have harsh ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide. Never use a harsh exfoliator to remove dead skin and oil because this blocks the pores. Use a mild astringent to reduce inflammation and dry out the skin to prevent oil and bacteria from clogging the pores. Make sure that you do not squeeze or pick your pimples because this increases the risk of scars. Treating acne internally is also an option but do not neglect the need to treat your hair follicles because these are the ones that get clogged with excess oils and bacteria.

There are various kinds of medicines available in the market to treat acne but there are many who believe in natural remedies. Natural medicines such as tea tree oil and vitamin B5 have proved to be very effective and do not cause any side effects. These medicines can be used for both mild and severe acne. Another reason why people opt for natural remedies to treat their acne is because these medicines do not have any side effects.
